peer review
hi! i like peer review because it gives chance to know other people's idea. i use to do lot of peer review when i was in the CESL. i learn a lot from peer review. peer review is helpfull for me because i can know other people's writing styles, mistkes , good points and negetive point too. it gives idea to make our essay strong. of course we also learn english vocabilary. in the peer review, i would like to discuss section with partner. it is good to discuss about our essay because we cannot find our mistake than other. we also able to know good sides about our essay. for example: my partner told me you have good imagination about your topics. you used personal expiriances too. it makes your essay strong and more intersting. he also told me my "hook" gives more ideas about topics. i think, i would like to focus on thesis statment and concultion paregraph. every person has differnt ideas about all the topics. if i have to rate peer review expiriance i would like to give 5/5 score. peer review also helps to improve reading skills and speaking skills. i really enjoy peer review activity. i hope, we can do more peer review which helps to improve writing skill.

Television: the Undiscovered Drug
①After a long, hard day of school and work, I trudge up the stairs to my apartment. As I approach the door, I can already hear the mumbles of the television. I open the door and am not surprised to see my sister on the couch, hand on remote, flipping through channels. I am now accustomed to this picture. My sister could be crowned couch potato queen. She watches television day and night--so much that my cousins and I now refer to her as the Human TV Guide. She knows what's on at a specific time on a specific channel. She has the channels of different stations of different areas memorized. She could tell you what channel MTV is in Torrance. She could tell you what channel USA is in Rowland Heights. She could tell you what channel TNT is in Fullerton. My sister has memorized practically everything there is to know about television. (1) , she has difficulty memorizing the multiplication table, all due to the effects of watching television endlessly. Television has had a detrimental effect on many youths.
②Television has dulled the mind of an average youth. Youths today is used to having their information passed to them on a silver platter. Not as many youths like to read anymore because it involves too much work. My sister hates to read, not only because there are words involved in that activity, but also because it is now impossible for her to visualize the world presented within the book. It is(2) impossible for her to focus on a book because of the short attention span she has developed, and reading books just takes too much time for her. Television presents the world to her, a different world every thirty minutes, which holds her attention. This now leaves her no mental work to do, except to decide which channel she would like to watch. Because watching television requires no mental work, the brains of the adolescents that watch television are not stimulated enough. This may lead to a slower learning process, which would then explain my sister’s inability to memorize the multiplication table.
③Television consumes time youths should be dedicating to more important and more essential things in their lives. Television takes away time that should be devoted to homework. When my sister gets home from school, she will immediately flip the television on, leaving her homework for later. When she finally decides to do her homework, the television will remain on, and she will sit on the couch with her books propped up in front of her, giving it only half of her attention. Homework takes longer to complete, and it probably will not be her best work since only half of her concentration was focused on it. Television also takes time away from quality family time. Most adolescents do not have a strong family connection. Families whose only time together is at the dinner table will waste precious quality time with their heads turned towards the television. The youth of today lose the strong morals and values they can get when spending time with their family. Television can even take away time from friends. When I spend time with my friends, I like to talk with them or go out. When my sister spends time with her friends, they spend the whole day watching the television. Their conversation revolves around what they are watching on the television. Most teens have the majority of their day devoted to the television.
④Television has exposed a world of violence, drugs, and sexual immorality to our youth, causing them to be apathetic towards these issues. Many television shows have made at least one of the three aspects, violence, drugs, and sexual immorality, a normalcy. The Simpsonsis a show that is enjoyed by many teens. This show depicts violence as something comedic. Regularly, in this show, the father chokes his son at least once, and the children watch a cartoon show called Itchy and Scratchy, in which a cat and mouse try to kill each other. Our youths today find this violence funny. When they encounter violence in real life, they do not consider it serious because they experience it everyday on the television. Characters in television shows such as Married with Children smoke, and although there are commercials advertising against smoking more than ever, smoking on the television gives our youths a different message. This advertises for the cigarette companies for practically free. In The Drew Carey Show, all the main characters spend their free time in a bar drinking. They even make and sell their very own beer. Cheers is another show that advocates drinking. Most of the show takes place in a bar. These characters in television shows have influence on our youth. Sexual immorality has also become common, which is exemplified by a show called Friends. Friends depicts each of their characters as people who sleep around. Sex is an integrated part of their lives and is expected when any one of the characters have a significant other. Undeclared revolves around college life in which college students have sex with each other “just for fun.” Adolescents of today model their behavior after characters like these who live in worlds of violence, drugs and sexual immorality, and they do not realize that what they are doing is wrong because to our youth, whatever they see and hear on television is right.
⑤When television was first invented, its purpose was to bring the family together and perhaps present a way in which we could receive information faster. In modern times, the television has managed to affect our youth in ways we would not have imagined. The family gathering concept has disappeared. We have accomplished a faster way to transmit information, (3) it was a little too much information a little too fast for the wrong audience. Television has taken over our way of life and we must stop the effects it has had on our youths and our society before it is too late.

ACTIVITY 2 from blogmaster
There is an article about traffic rules. It is so interesting that Natsumi gave it to Bostin and asked him to post it on our blog. However, lazy Bostin typed it forgetting the transitional expressions and missed the original one. Can you help us to correct it?
The 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th paragraphs miss transitional expressions (such as also, however, and in conclusion). Copy a sentence and add transitional expression(s) properly. Each student has to put two expressions at least. You have to finish posting by Monday midnight.
Example:
3rd-1) So why does most of the world travel on the right side today?
+++++What is “transitional expressions”?+++++
Check your HANDOUT we got on 4th September!
- Residents of Samoa are bracing for chaos this month as the Pacific island nation becomes the first country in decades to order motorists to start driving on the opposite side of the road. On the morning of Sept. 7, drivers will switch from the right side of the street — where about two-thirds of the world's traffic moves — to the left, in order to open the nation to low-cost used autos from left-driving Australia and New Zealand. It will mark the world's first road switch since Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone changed sides in the 1970s, and one of the only instances of switching from the right to the left; virtually every other change has been the reverse. Worried about increased accidents, tens of thousands of Samoans have protested the plan. As a Samoan lawyer opposed to the switch told the Times of London, "Cars are going to crash, people are going to die, not to mention the huge expense to our small country."
- 1) It remains a curiosity and a bit of a historical mystery why the world is divided over something as basic as which side of the road to drive on. 2) The fact that most people are right-handed has a lot to do with it; for much of history, travelers have stuck to the left. 3) Ancient Romans using chariots are believed to have held the reins with their right hands and a whip with their left; to avoid whipping oncoming drivers, they favored the left-hand side of the road (called "left-hand traffic"). 4) It's easier for right-handers to mount a horse from the left, so riders gravitated to that side to avoid oncoming traffic as they climbed on and off. 5) Knights and other armed travelers favored the left so they could do battle, if necessary, with their good hand.
- 1) Why does most of the world travel on the right side today? 2) Theories differ, there's no doubt Napoleon was a major influence. 3) The French have used the right at least the late 18th century (there's evidence of a Parisian "keep-right" law dating to 1794). 4) Some say that before the French Revolution, aristocrats drove their carriages on the left, forcing the peasantry to the right. 5) Amid the upheaval, fearful aristocrats sought to blend in with the proletariat by traveling on the right. 6) Regardless of the origin, Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered, Russia, Switzerland and Germany. Hitler, ordered right-hand traffic in Czechoslovakia and Austria in the 1930s. 7)Nations that escaped right-handed conquest, Great Britain, preserved their left-handed tradition.
- The U.S. has not always been a nation of right-hand drivers; earlier in its history, carriage and horse traffic traveled on the left, as it did in England. But by the late 1700s, the theory goes, teamsters driving large wagons pulled by several pairs of horses began prompting a shift to the right. A driver would sit on the rear left horse in order to wield his whip with his right hand; to see opposite traffic clearly, the teamsters traveled on the right.
- 1) One of the final moves to firmly standardize traffic directions in the U.S. occurred in the 20th century, when Henry Ford decided to mass-produce his cars with controls on the left (one reason, stated in a 1908 catalog: the convenience for passengers exiting directly onto the curb, "especially ... if there is a lady to be considered"). 2) These norms were set, many countries eventually adjusted to conform to the right-hand standard, Canada in the 1920s, Sweden in 1967 and Burma in 1970. 3) The U.K. and former colonies Australia and India are among the Western world's few remaining holdouts. 4) Several Asian nations, Japan, use the left— a possible legacy of samurai warriors who wore their swords on their left and didn't want to bump anyone — though many places use both right-hand-drive and left-hand-drive cars.
- 1) Widespread opposition to the changeover in Samoa, the government insists it's prepared for the move. 2) Officials have added road humps to slow traffic and, the Wall Street Journal, set up a training area near a sports stadium where people can practice driving on the flip side. 3) Sept. 7 and 8 have been declared national holidays to help people ease into the new law. Leau Apisaloma, a village chief, told the Journal there's no cause for alarm: "it will be hard, but we'll learn — we're not stupid."

roofs shapes
Architecture is the field that design the building. in this area everything that the architects choose it to be in the design means something such as roofs shapes and materials. all these choice based on the purpose of the building and the weather. in the cold areas around the world, usually the building have the Gable roofs which look like triangle; this type of roofs, they use it to allow the snow fall down from the top. the other common type of roofs is the flat one. this type is horizontal or almost, it has a very small slop to slid the water from the top. this kind mostly use in the hot climate areas. Also, the houses that had the flat roof, have more space inside and outside the house. in concluding, architecture is a very wide field and it has many roles to apply it in designing.

Chinese food
Chinese food is becoming a globally food those years; there are several Chinese restraints in many countries; however, is it really Chinese traditional food? For example, America has American Chinese food, the taste is more sweet than traditional Chinese food, and also it cooks very faster and easier because it is can be more similar than fast food in America. However, Chinese food is more focus on four types of dish. First, Chinese food considers the material which is good for human health. And then, it must be colorful and the smile must be perfect. And last one the more important one is taste. Chinese food focuses on the taste; we have lots of different seasoning to cook different dishes, such as Sichuan red paper is more hot and spicy; Shanghai’s seasoning is sweeter; and Northeast part of China’s soy sauce is more salt. Therefore, Chinese traditional food is so complex to cook and so delicious to eat by a long time history. It must be better than American Chinese food or something else.

(P.S. The blog activity posted on 9/5 has to be finished on 9/8, Tue)
Saturday, September 5, 2009
Choose five of the following sentences, rewrite them, and give explanation to the revised sentences. You can talk about issues that you can see concerning mechanics (grammar, punctuations, & spelling), sentence structure, or overall meaning of the sentence.
[This activity should be finished on or before Tuesday, 9/8. Don’t forget to include your name in your comment entry]
1. in the future, If i have to write about any topic, I'll read about it in the beginning, then If I have some questions, I'll try to answer them to help me understanding clearly, after that I'll try to find some one has more knowledge than me and let him help me answering the questions, to get correct thought and facts, because it is important to write with real information.
2. Someone asked me, do you think it is useful to you learning English in CESL(English as second language center). I said yes, it is really useful to me. It not only helps me improve my English skills, and also gives me such enough confidence that I can really enjoy the collage life.
3. When I have trouble and get a poor solution, I will seek the reason why I fail to resolve this problem by writing. I prefer to write mood diary because I can improve my mood by writing and nobody can see.
4. Sometimes it can be pretty hard in the pre-writing stage just trying to generate ideas and not have a boring paper that people won’t like to read.
5. Sometime, I get information online websites about my topics. It is also good techniques to start pre- writing.
6. I have not written papers in English very much so far. I should be used to express what I want to say in English. To solve my problem, keeping journals seems suitable. It will help me to write papers more freely and in relax.
7. So, I believe that freewriting let me free from pressure coming from being afraid of thinking too much or making mistakes when I write essays.
8. . When the writer shows his feeling infreestyle writing he is able to stop thinking and make mistakes without judgment. Also he is able to misspell be imperfect. Finally, freestyle helps people to express their feeling in their own
way.
9. We then looked at free writing, this is a sort of technique that you just write whatever you feel like writing, it helps you improve your writing skills it makes you more fluent in writing, and then also looked at focus free writing which is practically this same thing as free writing but here you have something to focus on, you are writing about something, that is a particular topic here.
10. Most of the time, I’d like to draw a visualized cluster. It helps me to clarify ideas that are in my mind, and at the same time it helps showing that the connections between different ideas that I have, creating a reasonable article.
11. Brainstorming makes our writing very easy and smooth rather than using other techniques. For instant, I need to write essay about California condor than first I need to go online and find information about condor like population, problems with condor, how useful for human being etc.
